What is a True³ Digital Mattress System?

The True³ Digital Mattress System is a Support Surface designed to help prevent Pressure Ulcers and to help to support the healing of Pressure Ulcers, Skin grafts, and Skin Flaps by offloading pressure from the wounds.

Why Do I Need a True³ Digital Mattress System?

Pressure ulcers (i.e. bedsores, pressure sores, decubitus ulcers) are areas of localized damage to the skin and underlying tissue. If a person is not adequately supported when lying or sitting, pressure to an area can lead to poor blood flow to the tissues, causing direct damage to cells and tissues. Support surfaces reduce the likelihood of a pressure ulcer developing by preventing the buildup of too much pressure for too long a time on one area of tissue.

How is the True³ Digital Mattress System Different?

Support surfaces deal with too much pressure in 2 ways:

(1) Immersion for Body Mass Distribution. By allowing a patient’s body to sink into the support surface, the weight and therefore the pressure is spread over a larger area. These are known as REACTIVE systems

(2) Alternating Pressure for Sequential Pressure Relief. Pressures in the cells of the support surface are changed intermittently to relieve pressure from individual areas of the body in sequence and allow tissues to recover before they bear pressure again. These are known as ACTIVE systems.

Years ago, Industry Experts & the National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel classified all support surfaces as REACTIVE or ACTIVE.

Almost all the Support Surfaces in America today are REACTIVE – Foam Pads, Gel Pads, Static Air Pads, Low Air Loss and Air Fluidized Systems are all REACTIVE systems. They work by Immersion. The patient sinks into the mattress like in a hammock. This often creates neck, hip, and back pain (because of the unnatural curvature of the spine and pelvis) causing the patient to be uncomfortable. This discomfort can result in lowered patient compliance and may even require pain medication to manage. In REACTIVE Systems, Pressure is redistributed for pressure reduction, but PRESSURE is CONSTANT unless the patient is moved. PRESSURE is NEVER reduced to zero.

ACTIVE systems are defined as those systems (always powered) that are designed to make periodical changes in pressure regardless of patient movement. In addition to pressure reduction, these cyclical pressure changes provide True Offloading through sequential pressure relief. This is not Immersion. The patient lies “on” the bed, not “in” the bed. The system supports the patient in a more normal alignment to help prevent pain and discomfort.

The True³ Digital System is an ACTIVE system – Pressure alternates every 2.5 minutes in the System to take pressure off of one third of your body at a time. PRESSURE is NOT CONSTANT. PRESSURE is sequentially REDUCED to ZERO.

Is There True³ Digital Mattress System for Bariatric Patients?

Yes, the True³ Digital EXTRA Mattress System (Bariatric) has a Patient Weight Limit of 750 pounds. It requires a Bariatric Hospital Bed Frame. Do not place the True³ Digital EXTRA Mattress System (Bariatric) on a Standard Hospital Bed Frame. Always check Patient Weight Limit for the Bariatric Hospital Bed Frame being used under the True³ Digital Express Mattress System (Bariatric) before use.

Can I Sit on the Side of the True³ Mattress?

Changing the Mode setting to Static/Firm is suggested before a patient is placed in a sitting position in the side of the mattress. Having a professional health caregiver present for support and observation is also suggested when a patient is placed in a sitting position on the side of the mattress – just like with a regular mattress.

Can I Sit Up in Bed on a True³ Digital Mattress System?

The True³ Digital mattress System is designed to support the patient while laying down or when sitting up while in bed. The system automatically maintains the necessary amount of air to support the patient.

How Do I Clean the True³ Digital Mattress System?

The True³ Digital Mattress System is designed to be easily cleaned with normal cleaning supplies (use bleach products with caution as they may discolor some of the materials used in the mattress system). Clean all surfaces and remove any fluids or debris by wiping down the system. More extensive cleaning instructions are available upon request.

What Kinds of Sheets, Pads, etc. Can I use With the Mattress?

The True³ Digital Mattress System is designed for the use of standard sized fitted and flat sheets. Draw sheets along with standard disposable incontinence pads (blue pads) are acceptable as well. Extensive padding with thick materials may reduce the offloading provided by the system and should be avoided.

Should I Use Pillows, Heel Protectors, etc. with the System?

The True³ Digital Mattress System is designed to provide offloading and cyclic, sequential pressure relief for the entire body. Any pillows, Padding, etc. placed between the patient’s body and the surface of the Mattress may reduce the offloading provided by the system. Please consult your professional health caregiver and/or physician for specific instructions.

Does the Patient Still need to be Turned Every 2 Hours?

The True³ Digital Mattress System is designed as an adjunctive offloading modality. There are multiple reasons other than Pressure Offloading that require a regular turning schedule for the patient. Please consult your professional health caregiver and/or physician for specific instructions. Do not stop your turning schedule without consulting your professional health caregiver and/or physician.

Does the True³ Digital Mattress System Make Noise?

The True³ Digital Pump is designed to fill the Mattress upon installation and to recirculate and transfer air between the cells during operation. Air is not taken into the pump and blown out through the mattress into the room. While small amounts or air may be released or taken in as necessary, the Pump is not a Blower Motor and makes little to no noise during operation.

Does the True³ Digital Mattress System Make the Room Hot?

The True³ Digital Pump is designed to fill the Mattress upon installation and to recirculate and transfer air between the cells during operation. Air is not taken into the pump and blown out through the mattress into the room. What Do I Do if the Power Goes Out?

In a power outage, the True³ Digital Pump will cease functioning unless it is connected to a backup power supply. If the power outage is longer than 20 minutes, you may decide to detach the Mattress Air Umbilical from the Pump and cap it off with the attached cover. This will keep the Mattress cells inflated and it will function like a static air mattress.

Please note that the bottom layer of air cells (and those under the patient’s head – the top 3 rows) are on a fail-safe subsystem with a one-way air valve. Once inflated, they will not lose air unless punctured as long as the one-way valve is not physically opened. They are designed to prevent the patient from bottoming out.

Once the power is restored, reconnect the umbilical to the pump (if it was detached) and turn the Pump on, off, and then on again to reboot the system. The Pump will then refill the system if required. (Do not try to refill a significantly deflated Mattress with the Patient laying on it – remove the patient first).

What Do I Do if the Power Cord is Unplugged?

If the System was disconnected more than 5 minutes, restore the power cord connection and follow the steps outlined for what to do if the power goes out. If the system was disconnected for 5 minutes or less, restore the power cord connection and turn the Pump on, off, and then on again to reboot the system.
